SHOGUN 2025

Led by Prof. Barbara Block, the bluefin tuna team at Stanford’s Hopkins Marine Station - joined by legendary postdocs, long-time technicians, and 30 passionate fishing enthusiasts, headed offshore from San Diego past the Channel Islands. Using rod and reel, we caught, tagged, and released bluefin tuna with archival and MiniPAT tags, continuing a 30-year effort to track their epic migrations to Japan and back...

Fatal shark incident in the eastern Mediterranean Sea highlights urgent need for enhanced management measures

Ocean & Coastal Management

We report the first documented fatal interaction worldwide involving dusky and possibly sandbar sharks at an aggregation near the Orot-Rabin power and desalination station in Hadera, Israel. The incident underscores the urgent need for science-based management to mitigate risks tied to unregulated human–shark proximity in confined coastal habitats.

Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) Along the Coast of Israel: Abundance and Social Structure

Aquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems

We examined the abundance and social structure of bottlenose dolphins along the Israeli coast, combining long-term photo-identification data with rigorous analysis of group dynamics and population size. The findings highlight key conservation needs for this protected marine mammal in the eastern Mediterranean.
