Fatal shark incident in the eastern Mediterranean Sea highlights urgent need for enhanced management measures

We report the first documented fatal interaction worldwide involving dusky and possibly sandbar sharks at an aggregation near the Orot-Rabin power and desalination station in Hadera, Israel. The incident underscores the urgent need for science-based management to mitigate risks tied to unregulated human–shark proximity in confined coastal habitats.

We examined the abundance and social structure of bottlenose dolphins along the Israeli coast, combining long-term photo-identification data with rigorous analysis of group dynamics and population size.
